I’m not sure a whole wing of the SEMA show could come up with an attractive aftermarket body for this puckish tall hatchback. The Chevrolet Trax has been in the market for 7 years now and has gathered quite some complaints over the years. Some angles show it as sort of a shrunken version of a generic crossover, but from the front and back I find it clownish. I’d rather look at the 2017 Trax than the outgoing car, but let’s be honest, it’s still a weird-looking thing.Remember that the promising Golf Alltrack starts at about $26,000. The reasonable size and ability of the CUV makes sense in the low $20k range (like the FWD Trax LT at $23,795), but my as-tested price of $29,490 would make me look elsewhere. If you’re spending the money for an AWD Trax over a front-driver (with snow tires if you live where the weather is an issue), or for one of the higher trim levels, I’d say you’re missing the point. The hot-selling Jeep Renegade is less frugal, but its 2.4-liter engine has way more power and torque. Honda’s HR-V does better (28/35 for the front-driver), and so does the always-all-wheel Subaru Crosstrek (26/34 city/highway). Estimates of 25 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 on the highway (or 24/30 for the AWD car I drove) are not super competitive. But on a few rare stretches of open road, over 40 miles per hour, you can feel the 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque struggle not to feel slow. Chevy probably had us stick to city driving because that’s where the mild torque-pop from this little engine feels most effective. The only powertrain offered is the 1.4-liter turbo four and a six-speed automatic transmission.Light and quick, the steering shouldn’t be an issue while dicing with Sprinters and hipster bikes to get into the turn lane, or to grab the good spot in the Jewel-Osco parking lot. On that same tip, the steering calibration seems just right for city driving. My day in Chicago was spent traversing the city, and the Trax offered both great visibility and easy parking/maneuvering ability on the route. And the small-but-tall body shape (admittedly one shared with lots of stuff in this class) is great for city driving. ![]() Especially with the rear seats folded, there’s a massive amount of space for hauling stuff around.

The main menu where you craft your items and keep track of your inventory is a tad clunky. Windbound would have flowed a little better and gave you the sense of purpose as you sail to island to island if this was the case instead. It should be a constant flow of islands all over the ocean, as we know our oceans can go on for hundreds of thousands of miles. The level system doesn't need to be there and found it unnecessary. The goal at the end of your journey is you have five islands to travel through in each chapter, with a total of five chapters. I would have thought that having a hoard of items in your inventory would be an advantage. In the event you need a lot of things for a crafting project, you need the space and need to plan accordingly. I found that the easiest way to keep things simple and easy was to collect only what you absolutely needed. By the way, the game doesn't tell you that you can't collect every single thing you see and hoard your items, as there is a limit. Upon your journey, you'll learn that you must collect a number of different items to craft items for your survival such as weapons, boats and boat accessories. I feel like more explanation would have been helpful as it's such a critical part of Windbound and this girl's survival. If I'm standing still, I shouldn't lose any stamina, but that's just my opinion. If I'm standing still or walking normally, not moving a muscle, my stamina depletes slowly, if I sprint, I lose stamina temporarily. If you deplete your stamina bar, depending on where you are, you'll likely collapse on the spot or drown in the ocean. It's a pretty straight forward explanation if you deplete your hunger, you'll starve to death. The two bars up at the top left of the screen are your hunger (red) and your stamina (yellow). As it's a survival game, I get that it's more than likely how the development team deliberately designed the gameplay, but without the main bread and butter of a strong narrative, why bother playing Windbound? No matter how many questions I had and the amount of frustration I had playing Windbound, I gave it all I had. ![]() Now, I understand that Windbound's story isn't its strong point, but you're left with no choice but to wander around and find out the hard way. Why am I collecting these items? Why am I travelling island to island? Why do I have to activate these things resembling a podium with a blue glowing artifact around it? Why can't I put more items in my inventory? Why am I so weak while battling enemies? There were way too many "Why" questions and not enough "How can I?" instead. Most of my time with Windbound was wondering "Why?". The tutorial was absolutely lacking detail and didn't really help all that much. When I say vague, I mean that you might as well not give me a tutorial unless its on the crafting, sailing and other action heavy pieces of gameplay. As you enter the world of Windbound you are given a very vague tutorial on the gameplay mechanics and how to navigate around. I'm all for a learning curve during the first few hours of gameplay as I learn the mechanics, but unfortunately it never really went away, even after a handful of hours, which eventually led to frustration. My experiences during my adventure was a mixture of confusion and uncertainty. Windbound's overall gameplay can be described as a survival exploration game. You don't know what it is and it disappears again only for you to end up losing your boat and washing ashore some form of an island. Then, a big giant creature comes out from underneath the sea. The girl then gets caught in a storm, the waters get rough and she gets separated from her group of people. Windbound starts off as a girl is sailing solo on her wooden raft with people on nearby wooden rafts. Being a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda, my expectations went a little high but I felt that there was still hope that Windbound would knock the wind out of me. From the second I saw the trailer for Windbound, my first thought was Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild meets Moana. ![]() I'm not going to lie, I find happiness in zoning out to a good game and forgetting all my problems for a little while.
